Memorial responds to New Zealand shooting

On Friday, March 15, the world reacted with shock and sadness to the news of the mosque shootings in Christchurch, New Zealand.

On behalf of the Memorial University community, I extend our deep and sincere condolences to the family, friends and community of those killed or injured in this act of terror.

Please know there are resources available for members of our community who may require support in the aftermath of this tragedy.

The 24-hour mental health crisis line can be reached provincewide at 1-888-737-4668 or you can text ‘talk’ to 686868.

For students, counsellors at the Student Wellness and Counselling Centre are available Monday-Friday and appointments can be made in person or by telephone (864-8500).

For employees, there are resources available through the Employee Assistance Program.

We stand with the Muslim members of our community in solidarity and sorrow. On Friday, I wrote to the Muslim Students’ Association to offer condolences and support. In that message, I affirmed our commitment to providing a safe and respectful environment for all members of our campus community.

The diversity of the Memorial community is one of its greatest strengths. All are welcome to practise their faith, share their culture and actively engage in life at Memorial. This enriches our campus community, as well as our province, and we are better because of it.
